Excerpt: The last few weeks have been very busy at my home parish, Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church: Two weeks ago, we enjoyed our annual visit from Bishop Mary, who confirmed twenty teens and adults. Yesterday, we said a sad goodbye to our Interim Rector for the last two years, the Reverend Kate Atkinson. This morning, the Vestry and Rector Search Committee gave an informal but delighted welcome to our new Rector (the third Rector for St. Andrew’s since 1957), Rev. Channing Smith. Bishop Mary will formally install Channing as Rector in September 2009. Some photos: Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves Rev. Kate Atkinson Rev. Excerpt: Baby names change with the winds of fashion and new research suggests the faster they get popular, the faster they get lame. Take Tricia. Back in the 1950s, almost nobody named their baby girls Tricia. By the 1970s, the name had skyrocketed to the 144th most popular girl’s name and then just as quickly, Tricia fell back into disuse. It’s no longer in the top 1000 names for girls. Literally hundreds of other names have followed similar trajectories. It turns out that a name’s sad tumble into obscurity is tightly correlated with the speed of its rise. And that principle — what…
bobby f. writes “Infoworld has published its list of the biggest cults in tech — including Palmists, Newtonians, Commodorians, the Brotherhood of the Ruby, IBM power systems fanboys, Ubuntu-ists, and Lispers. A pretty fun read (unless you really are a cult member).” Although I think it’s pretty clear that the Apple camp isn’t an opinionated cult, they’re just always right. Fire away.

Excerpt: For those who haven’t seen it so far, my mysqlbinlog patch is aimed for use in continuous backup situations. It is designed retrieve binary logs direct from remote servers and write them directly to disk in their raw format. When combined with mysqldump snapshots you can have an almost up-to-the-second point-in-time backup for your server just in case its blown off the face of the earth. The advantage this has over a blackhole slave is you can run multiple instances of mysqlbinlog on one server with minimal overhead to backup multiple servers into one. Its also much easier to…

Excerpt: If an application is running gratuitously slowly, there is a reasonable probability that the code causing the problem will be on a stack at any given instant. Stacks can be obtained with ctrl-\ (ctrl-break under Windows) or jstack. Better jconsole or visualvm will allow you to concentrate on a specific thread rather than wading through lots of waiting threads. When you have the application running slow, take a few samples. Hopefully you can spot the issue. Whilst it wont always work, it has worked for me a number of times. The other week Netbeans did it’s usual thing, and used CPU…

Our house and garden are covered with Cottonwood Fairy Fuzz every year when the female Cottonwood polar trees along the Guadalupe River behind our house release their seeds. We are in the middle of this charming mess of fluff right now. Drifts of seeds line the edge of every walk. In the short distance between my office in WP668 and the house, I collect tiny tufts of fuzz in my hair and on my clothes. Every spiderweb is full. Some photos:

Excerpt: theodp writes “Barack Obama has squared up for a major battle with big business, announcing a crackdown on offshore tax avoidance and evasion by US multinationals that’s designed to raise $210B and make it easier for companies to create ‘good jobs here at home’. Obama cited a building in the Cayman Islands where more than 18,000 US companies are housed: ‘Either this is the biggest building in the world or it is the biggest tax scam in the world,’ he said. ‘I think the American people know which it is.’ The administration says that more than a third of US…
